Tsunami Relief – First construction measure completed in Aceh, Indonesia in July

The first community sanitation facility can start to operate in the village of Rheum Baroh, Aceh in July 2005. This was announced in the progress report on BORDA relief measures as part of the “Bremen Helps” Program.  

In the project region the flood wave destroyed 95% of all dwellings including sanitary facilities with wells and toilets. Due to the salinisation of the groundwater, fresh water can only be supplied with the use of tankers.


Waste Management – Indonesian experts visited waste management plants in Bremen

Indonesian experts guided by colleagues from Nehlsen-PlumpDuring a three-month visit, two experts from the BORDA partner organisations Bali Fokus and BEST, Indonesia had the opportunity to learn and experience methods and technologies of waste management as practiced in Bremen.

Waste disposal is a great problem in Indonesia’s major cities, where only 30% of household garbage is collected by state enterprises. With the research visit by the two Indonesian experts, BORDA contributed to the UN Decade “Education for Sustainable Development” integrated into the InWEnt ASA Exchange Program.

. Wenn die Katastrophenhelfer in Südasien abziehen, wird Borda aktiv: Die "Bremer Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Überseeforschung und Entwicklung" sorgt im Rahmen der Aktion "Bremen hilft" für den langfristigen Wiederaufbau in den Tsunami-gebeutelten Regionen. Genauer: In Banda Aceh auf Nordsumatra. Stefan Reuter, stellvertretender Geschäftsführer von Borda, sieht den Schwerpunkt in Armutsgebieten, in denen sauberes Trinkwasser und geregelte Abwassersysteme eher Luxus als Normalität sind.
