Mid-term Feedback from weltwaerts Young Professional

By Marina Mueller, weltwaerts programme BORDA/TED, Lesotho

Already another 3 months have passed by and it’s time for a second report. I can hardly believe how fast time is flying by. It seems to me as if I did my last report just last week. Anyway a lot of things happened ever since: two goodbyes, one removal, several trips and not to forget the labor intensive hours at work.

Laborwise I spent about half of the time on my building site, the construction of a disabled-friendly toilet at the St. Angela home, which is of course connected to a DEWATS-plant. This month we could celebrate the initiation of both.

Goldman Global Award for Yuyun Ismawati

By Andreas Ulrich, Director BORDA

On behalf of the BORDA partner network and its associates, I would like to warmly congratulate our colleague, Ms. Yuyun Ismawati, for winning the Goldman Global Award.

I still remember my first meeting with Yuyun in Bali in 2000 during my search for a Balinese partner for BORDA`s SANIMAS (“sanitation by communities”) project, that was funded by AusAID through WSP-EAP. Yuyun was recommended to me by a good friend of mine, Paul Boon, then Country Director of the Belgian NGO, FADO.

In 2007 BORDA launched its annual Fund Raising Campaign “BORDA helps” for the first time. The donated money was sufficient to fund two projects, one of them the construction of a new water supply in the south Indian village of Jalahallihundi. Especially the amount of 18.000 Euros that was donated by the “East Asian Society Bremen” boosted this project. Together with its Indian Partner organization RLHP Borda was able to establish a new water supply. The best way to describe the situation is to listen to the inhabitants of Jalahallihundi:

800 New biogas plants to be constructed in 2009, BORDA did pioneer work in the late 70s

By Tim Cordsen, BORDA Bremen

Due to the amendment of the “Renewable Energy Sources Law” (or feed-in law) in Germany, which has become effective in January 2009, the construction of small biogas plants became very interesting especially for small and medium sized farmers. There are already 4000 agricultural biogas plants; 650 of them are situated in the federal state of Lower-Saxony in Germany, which is seen as the pioneer state for this technology. The industry expects to build up to 800 new biogas plants in 2009.

There are several reasons for this boom. At the moment we are witnessing a so called “double effect”:
